TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Director General of Land Transportation of the Ministry of Transportation, Aan Suhanan, unveiled several strategies for the upcoming Christmas and New Year holidays. With these strategies, the government hopes to maintain smooth traffic flow, improve road user safety, and ensure the public's mobility stays safe and comfortable.
"While facing increased mobility during the Christmas 2025 and New Year 2026 holidays, the Ministry of Transportation has prepared key strategies to anticipate traffic density," said Aan Suhanan in a statement in Jakarta on Sunday, November 16, 2025, as quoted from Antara.
Aan conveyed this during a meeting in Surakarta. Several strategies were developed based on data and evaluations of previous Christmas and New Year transport arrangements.
The government intends to boost road capacity as part of its effort to maintain holiday traffic. Specifically on routes to tourist destinations, Aan mentioned, increasing road capacity will be done through one-way, contraflow, or odd-even arrangements.
Based on evaluations of previous Christmas and New Year transport, restricting the operation of three-axle and above cargo transportation can also be a strategy to ensure smooth traffic flow, especially on toll roads. "We have drafted regulations regarding the restriction of three-axle and above cargo transportation during Christmas and New Year holidays," said Aan.
Furthermore, the Ministry of Transportation has prepared a delaying system strategy, which involves intentionally slowing down and redirecting vehicle flow to avoid total congestion at vulnerable points. "This strategy requires careful assessment, so that the delaying system does not just shift congestion to other points," he added.
Aside from traffic flow, this year's Christmas and New Year holidays also coincide with the peak of the rainy season as predicted by the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), thus potentially facing extreme weather conditions. Hence, Aan emphasizes the importance of anticipating heavy rain that could lead to disaster vulnerabilities in Central Java, such as landslides or floods.
"We hope landslides won't occur, but we still need to prepare mitigation measures by establishing integrated posts, preparing heavy equipment, and others in vulnerable areas," Aan said.
According to Aan, collaboration and synergy are key to implementing a successful Christmas and New Year transport arrangement. "The next key to success is to apply K3I or Control, Coordination, Communication, and Information. We can establish joint posts and integrate data from each stakeholder's application for swift handling," said Aan.
