Iran: Opportunity Remains for Indonesian Ships to Cross Strait of Hormuz

4 hours ago 9

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Indonesia, Mohammad Boroujerdi, stated that Indonesian ships still have the opportunity to pass through the Strait of Hormuz even though the region is currently at war. However, the voyages must adhere to the special security protocols set by Iran.

During his visit to Solo, Central Java, on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, Boroujerdi explained that the traffic conditions in the Strait of Hormuz are currently tightly regulated due to the ongoing conflict. Nevertheless, Iran prioritizes friendly countries, including Indonesia.

"Regarding the Strait of Hormuz, it is currently in a state of war, so the traffic protocol has become special protocol. We have informed friendly countries that their ships can pass through the Hormuz Strait," Boroujerdi told reporters in Solo.

He emphasized that Indonesia is among Iran's friendly countries. Moreover, he stated that several Indonesian ships have successfully passed through the strait.

"Indonesia is a friendly country to Iran, and some Indonesian ships have been able to pass through the Strait of Hormuz. For the remaining ships, discussions are still ongoing with the Indonesian authorities," he said.

Boroujerdi added that the opportunity will remain open as long as the Indonesian government complies with the security conditions and protocols in the conflict area. However, he did not specify the requirements and protocols.

"If the Indonesian government accepts the prevailing security conditions and protocols during the war, we will proudly guarantee the safety of Indonesian ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz," he added.

He also refuted the notion that Iran is causing insecurity in the Strait of Hormuz. According to him, Iran has a historical role in maintaining the region's stability, including in the Persian Gulf.

"We are not the ones making the Strait of Hormuz unsafe. For hundreds of years, we have ensured the safety of traffic there. Insecurity actually comes from external parties entering this area," Boroujerdi said.

U.S.-Israel Attack on Iran

During the occasion, Boroujerdi also mentioned the ongoing conflict in his country. He mentioned that aerial attacks are still ongoing and target various civilian infrastructures such as mosques, hospitals, schools, and energy facilities.

He stated that the conflict, which has been ongoing for over a month, has caused extensive damage, including the destruction of tens of thousands of residential houses and casualties from various groups. Nevertheless, he affirmed that Iran will not surrender and will continue to defend itself.

"We do not see any room for negotiation in this condition. What we hope is for the opposing party to realize their mistakes," he said.

On the other hand, Boroujerdi appreciated the support from the Indonesian people towards Iran. He mentioned that the solidarity came from various regions, including during his visit to Surakarta or Solo.

He also conveyed that the relationship between Iran and Indonesia has been established for hundreds of years and is expected to continue to develop, including in trade, economic, and tourism cooperation.

"We are present in Surakarta to express our gratitude to the Indonesian people for their extraordinary support," he said.

Boroujerdi added that communication between Iran and Indonesia regarding voyages through the Strait of Hormuz is ongoing as part of efforts to ensure trade routes continue operating amid the conflict.

During his visit to Solo on that Wednesday, the Iranian Ambassador, accompanied by representatives from the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran, met with the Mayor of Solo, Respati Ardi, at the Solo City Hall. Additionally, Boroujerdi and his entourage also visited the residence of the 7th President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, in the Sumber Village, Banjarsari District.
