TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The series of earthquakes that have struck Sukabumi and Bogor since Saturday, September 20, 2025, are not related to volcanic activity from Mount Salak. The Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) has confirmed that these events were caused by tectonic activity from a local fault, the specifics of which are still under investigation.
Daryono, the Director of Earthquakes and Tsunamis at the BMKG, explained this in a written statement. According to him, the main 4.0-magnitude earthquake that occurred just before midnight on Saturday was a shallow crustal tectonic earthquake.
Evidence that the Sukabumi-Bogor earthquake is tectonic is supported by seismic wave records from the DBJI (Darmaga) and CBJI (Citeko) Seismic Sensors, which showed strong S (shear) wave characteristics with high-frequency components. "This fact also confirms that the earthquake is not triggered by a volcanic earthquake," he stated.
Daryono also emphasized that the seismic activity was not a result of the Citarik fault, as the main earthquake's epicenter and its aftershocks are located far to the west of that fault line. He explained that the region is geologically complex, containing numerous active fault sources that have not yet been thoroughly mapped.
The sequence of events began with the main 4.0-magnitude earthquake, centered in the Kabandungan area, approximately 26 kilometers northeast of the center of Sukabumi Regency, at a depth of 7 kilometers.
The tremors were felt with an intensity of III-IV on the MMI (Modified Mercalli Intensity) scale in the Kalapanunggal and Kabandungan areas of Sukabumi. An earthquake of this magnitude is typically felt noticeably indoors, creating vibrations similar to a passing truck. It can also be felt by many people inside and some outside, and is strong enough to cause pottery to break and windows or doors to rattle.
In the Bogor area, the earthquake tremors reached up to a III MMI scale in Leuwiliang and were weaker in other surrounding areas.
According to the BMKG, as of Sunday night, there have been 39 aftershocks. Five of these aftershocks were felt by the public, with the largest having a magnitude of 4.8.
