TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The highly anticipated French Ligue 1 match, Le Classique, between Olympique de Marseille and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) has been postponed due to severe weather warnings in Southern France. The new date, however, coincides with the 2025 Ballon d'Or awards ceremony, a major annual event honoring the world's best football players.
The match was originally scheduled for Sunday night at Stade Vélodrome in Marseille. However, local authorities issued an "orange weather warning" in response to anticipated heavy rain, floods, and thunderstorms. Rainfall was projected to reach 70-120 mm, with the peak of the storm expected between 19:00 and 22:00 local time, directly overlapping with the 19:45 kickoff.
In light of these conditions, the Prefect of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur (PACA) advised the public to avoid all unnecessary travel for safety reasons. Following this recommendation, the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) made the decision to postpone the match.
"Olympique de Marseille regrets that the conditions are not met to play the match tonight, both for its players, for its supporters already present, and for the full visibility of the event," stated Marseille's official club announcement.
PSG also confirmed the postponement via its social media channels.
The LFP has rescheduled the match for Monday, September 22, 2025, at 20:00 local time at Stade Vélodrome. This new date, however, creates a scheduling conflict with the 2025 Ballon d'Or event, which is set to take place at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris.
This clash is particularly notable for PSG, as at least eight of its players have been nominated for the prestigious award. The nominees include Ousmane Dembélé, a favorite to win despite a current injury, as well as Desire Doué, Achraf Hakimi, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Nuno Mendes, João Neves, Fabián Ruiz, and Vitinha. Additionally, PSG's head coach, Luis Enrique, is a contender for the best coach category.
The postponement occurs as PSG is enjoying a strong start to the season with four consecutive victories. In contrast, Marseille is currently working to find stability, sitting in eighth place with a record of two wins and two losses.
There has been no further clarification from the LFP or the Ballon d'Or organizers regarding a possible schedule adjustment to resolve this conflict.
