TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto is scheduled to address the 80th General Debate of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, at 9:00 a.m. local time, or 8:00 p.m. Jakarta time.
Cabinet Secretary Lieutenant Colonel Teddy Indra Wijaya confirmed that Prabowo will be the third world leader to deliver a speech, following Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and U.S. President Donald Trump.
"The President will deliver the speech third in line," Teddy stated on the Cabinet Secretariat’s Instagram account, @sekretariat.kabinet, on Monday, September 22, 2025.
Teddy highlighted that this year's General Assembly is a pivotal moment for Indonesia. The Indonesian government intends to assert its role as a leader of the Global South, consistently advocating for a fairer and more inclusive reform of global governance.
Tri Tharyat, the Director General of Multilateral Cooperation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, explained that while Indonesia was originally slated to have the first speaking slot based on a lottery, the order adheres to long-standing UN tradition. This tradition places Brazil in the first position and the United States in the second.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that a number of critical global issues will be addressed in Prabowo's speech. "Certainly, the current global dynamics, including the recent attack on a sovereign state in Qatar, will be addressed. The issue of Palestine will also be brought up," Tri said during a media briefing at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs office in Jakarta on Thursday, September 11, 2025.
In addition to addressing Middle Eastern issues, Prabowo is expected to outline the Asta Cita vision for Indonesia’s foreign policy. Tri added that the President will emphasize the need for a more significant role for countries in the Global South.
However, Tri stated that the specific priorities of Prabowo's discussion could not be fully disclosed before the official presentation. "We will wait for the launch, but what stands out will definitely be addressed by us," he assured.
Prabowo has been allocated 15 minutes to speak, in line with the session's rules. His presence marks the return of an Indonesian President to the UN forum after a decade-long absence.
During the presidency of Joko Widodo, the forum was more frequently represented by Vice President Jusuf Kalla. President Widodo himself was recorded as having attended the UN General Assembly virtually in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
