TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Head of Jakarta's Environmental Agency, Asep Kuswanto, mentioned that the Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) waste processing facility in North Jakarta, known as RDF Rorotan, is set to be fully operational by November 2025. He stated that this waste processing facility could help reduce the pollution of microplastics, a public concern.

He said, "Directly, it will reduce the impact of inadequate waste processing, which contributes to the dangers of microplastics," during a media interview at Jakarta City Hall on Friday, October 24, 2025.

Asep is optimistic that the impact of microplastics can be reduced because plastic waste will no longer end up at the Bantargebang Final Disposal Area (TPA) in Bekasi. The previous pile of waste at the large landfill was believed to contribute to the presence of microplastics in the air. Microplastics even become integrated into the atmosphere and fall with the rain.

According to Asep, plastic waste from RDF Rorotan can also be used as an alternative fuel for steam boilers owned by large industrial businesses. Asep claimed that the RDF facility will not cause air pollution and addressed the concerns of nearby residents regarding the emerging odor.

Shortly after its inauguration in February 2025, the RDF Rorotan operation had to be halted again due to unpleasant odors and smoke that residents complained about. The RDF Plant Rorotan has three waste bunkers with a capacity of 2,500 tons per day, claimed to be the largest in the world. The facility is capable of processing about 875 tons of waste in 15 hours.

Before the trial phase, the RDF Rorotan management endeavored to add deodorizers to eliminate the odor complained about by residents. The processing infrastructure also strengthened its exhaust gas control system.

After the preparation phase, RDF Rorotan finally began the trial on October 1st. The capacity of processed waste is still being gradually regulated, ranging from 30 to 200 tons per day. Asep said, "It has been running well and is in accordance with the standards."
