TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The number of corporate bankruptcies in Japan surpassed 1,000 in July for the second consecutive month, as a labor crunch and rising prices continue to pressure small businesses, local media reported on Monday, August 10, citing a survey by a credit research firm, as quoted from Antara, citing Xinhua.
According to Tokyo Shoko Research, 1,028 companies went bankrupt in July, a 6.9 percent surge compared to the same period a year earlier, with total liabilities surging 41.4 percent to 236.3 billion yen (1 yen = Rp113) or approximately US$1.5 billion (US$1 = Rp17,913), Kyodo News reported.
Bankruptcies triggered by the labor crunch hit a record high of 63, including 36 caused by soaring personnel costs, double the number from a year earlier.
Meanwhile, cases stemming from rising prices reached 93, the highest since 2022, as a weaker yen pushed up material and raw material costs, the report said.
By industry, the services sector recorded the highest number of bankruptcies with 342 cases, while the information and communications sector saw a 62.5 percent surge in bankruptcies.
This figure includes software-related companies impacted by the increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI).
Small companies with liabilities under 100 million yen accounted for nearly 80 percent of the total bankruptcies.
NHK previously reported that 5,335 businesses went under during the first half of 2026, hitting a 14-year high, citing data from research firm Teikoku Databank.
The figure reflected a surge of 332 businesses compared to the previous year. The businesses had debts of at least 10 million yen.
