TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Another team has booked its place in the 2026 World Cup. Egypt secured their qualification after a 3–0 victory over Djibouti in the African Zone qualifiers on Thursday early morning, October 9, 2025.
The Pharaohs became the third African team to advance, following Morocco and Tunisia.
Egypt’s win came through two goals from Mohamed Salah and one from Ibrahim Adel. With the result, Egypt topped Group A with 23 points from nine matches, five points ahead of Burkina Faso in second place, with one game remaining.
Teams Qualified So Far
Egypt’s victory makes them the 19th team confirmed for the 2026 World Cup, which will feature a record 48 teams. In the coming weeks, several other nations are expected to secure qualification, including the first representatives from Europe.
1. Host Nations
Slots: 3
As joint hosts, three nations from the CONCACAF region—the United States, Canada, and Mexico—automatically qualify for the tournament.
2. Asia (AFC)
Slots: 8 direct + 1 playoff
Qualified teams: 6
Australia
Iran
Japan
Jordan
South Korea
Uzbekistan
Two remaining slots will be contested in the fourth round. Indonesia will compete with Saudi Arabia and Iraq for one of them. In their opening match, the Garuda squad fell 2–3 to Saudi Arabia.
3. South America (CONMEBOL)
Slots: 6 direct + 1 playoff
Qualified teams: 6
Argentina
Brazil
Ecuador
Colombia
Paraguay
Uruguay
The playoff position will be decided between Bolivia and Venezuela in the remaining fixtures.
4. Oceania (OFC)
Slots: 1 direct + 1 playoff
Qualified team: 1
For the first time, the Oceania region has been granted a direct World Cup slot. New Zealand secured the ticket, while New Caledonia will compete in the intercontinental playoff. Previously, Oceania teams could only qualify through playoff rounds.
5. Africa (CAF)
Slots: 9 direct + 1 playoff
Qualified teams: 3

6. Europe (UEFA)
Slots: 16 direct
European qualification will conclude in November 2025, followed by playoffs in March 2026. As of now, no European team has secured a spot.
7. North, Central America, and the Caribbean (CONCACAF)
Slots: 4 direct + 1 playoff
Qualified teams: 3 (hosts)
Aside from the three host nations, three direct slots and two playoff positions remain up for grabs.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup will kick off on June 11, 2026, at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, with the final scheduled for July 19, 2026, at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. The group stage draw will take place in December 2025 in Washington, D.C.
