TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) stated that the 6.1-magnitude tectonic earthquake in South Nias, North Sumatra, on Tuesday at 13:02:23 WIB (Western Indonesia Time) was caused by subduction activity.

As reported by ANTARA, Dr. Wijayanto, the BMKG Director for Earthquake and Tsunami, stated in a release on Tuesday that BMKG analysis indicates the earthquake occurred at a depth of 35 km. The epicenter of the earthquake was located at the following coordinates: 0.67 degrees south latitude and 98.29 degrees east longitude. It was located precisely in the sea, 157 km southeast of Nias.

Tsunami modeling results indicate that the earthquake did not have the potential to generate a tsunami.

Based on the location of the epicenter and the depth of the hypocenter, the earthquake was a shallow event, and source mechanism analysis indicates a thrust faulting mechanism.

Based on public reports, the earthquake was felt at an intensity of IV MMI (felt by many people indoors and by some outdoors during the day; causing earthenware to break, windows and doors to rattle, and walls to creak) in North Tapanuli.

An intensity of III MMI (vibrations clearly felt indoors, resembling the passing of a truck) was experienced in Padang Sidempuan, South Nias, Padang Panjang, South Pesisir, Bukittinggi, Padang, Padang Pariaman, Pariaman, West Pasaman, and Agam Regency.

Meanwhile, an intensity of II MMI (vibrations felt by a few people; light, suspended objects sway) was felt in Central Tapanuli and Gunung Sitoli.

As of 13:30 WIB, BMKG monitoring results indicate no aftershock activity.

The BMKG will continue to monitor aftershock activity and provide updated information to stakeholders and the public. The public is advised to remain calm and not be influenced by issues whose truth cannot be justified.

"Avoid buildings that are cracked or damaged due to the earthquake," he said.
