TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Mount Rinjani National Park Office will reopen the hiking trails of Mount Rinjani on Lombok Island, West Nusa Tenggara, starting from March 28, 2026. Hiking to one of Indonesia's highest mountains was previously closed since January 1, 2026, due to extreme weather conditions.
The head of Mount Rinjani National Park Office, Budhy Kurniawan, said the hiking trail will be reopened after a comprehensive evaluation of the area's conditions, supporting facilities, and the readiness of human resources to face the tourism season.
"The plan to reopen the hiking trails is set for March 28, 2026," he said in Mataram on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
Budhy mentioned that the agency has improved safety aspects, conservation, and destination management in a more inclusive manner by involving local governments and local communities since the closure.
The new system is claimed to be safer, modern, and globally standardized. These include the use of RFID bracelets, personal beacons to monitor hikers' positions, the establishment of a command center, radio communication integration, and the digital implementation of zero waste.
Quality Hiking
The Governor of West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), Lalu Muhamad Iqbal, said the provincial government fully supported the reopening of Mount Rinjani's hiking trails. He is pushing for collaborative area management, stressing that Mount Rinjani tourism is not heading for mass appeal but rather exclusive, quality, and conservation-oriented hiking.
"World-class experiences must go hand in hand with ecosystem protection," he said.
Iqbal urged for strengthened coordination between the Mount Rinjani National Park Office, local governments at provincial and district levels, and local residents, especially concerning hiking safety, environmental conservation, and the management of world-class tourist destinations.
He cited the handling of tourist accidents some time ago, which required cross-sectoral cooperation, including the vertical rescue initiative carried out by various stakeholders as a form of shared responsibility in managing Mount Rinjani tourism. "Mount Rinjani is a symbol of community life. We hope that the innovation of the Mount Rinjani National Park Office in environmental and tourism governance will be realized soon," Iqbal stated.
Throughout 2025, Mount Rinjani contributed Rp25.92 billion in non-tax state revenue with a total turnover of Rp182.05 billion. The number of hikers reached 80,214 people, consisting of 43,236 foreign tourists and 36,978 domestic tourists. Meanwhile, the number of non-hiking tourist visits reached 52,108 people, with 51,311 domestic tourists and 797 foreign tourists.
