TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Japan is no stranger to innovation, and this is evident even in unexpected places—including setting a record for the smallest park in the world. In the quiet town of Nagaizumi, lies a tiny 2.58-square feet park that comes complete with a set of Verdant grass, a charming one-person bench, and stone carvings—including one representing the town’s symbolic flower.
Even before it was officially recognized by Guinness World Records in late February, it has always been a favorite spot for locals and tourists alike. Many residents stop by to sit on the bench, while travelers make the most of their visit by snapping photos in the park.
The record-breaking title was previously held by Mill Ends Park in Portland, Oregon, which had claimed the title for nearly three decades with its modest size of just 3.1 square feet (452 square inches). This tiny park even inspired the creation of the current record back in 1988.
In 2023, the town of Nagaizumi was set to surpass that record, enlisting professional surveyors to measure the park and issue a certificate of verification.
In late February, an official adjudicator from Guinness World Records visited the site to confirm the new record, as reported by Smithsonian Magazine.
