TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The majority of respondents in a poll conducted by SSRS for CNN, as reported by Antara, expressed satisfaction with President Donald Trump's State of the Union address before Congress. However, respondents still doubt his ability to control the cost of living.
The survey, released Wednesday, showed nearly two-thirds of respondents viewed the speech positively, with 38 percent expressing a “very positive” response.
The poll also noted that Republican supporters viewed Trump's speech at a proportion roughly 13 percent higher than the overall CNN audience composition.
Following the speech, 64 percent of respondents said Trump's policies would lead the United States in the right direction, while 54 percent believed the president's priorities were appropriate.
However, respondents still doubted Trump's ability to fulfill promises regarding the cost of living.
Before the speech, most viewers hoped Trump would address economic issues, but 45 percent later found the address insufficient in tackling those concerns.
Trump's address became the longest in the history of presidential speeches to Congress, lasting 107 minutes. The previous record was held by former Democratic President Bill Clinton.
The State of the Union is a constitutional mandate for the president to summarize government achievements, assess national conditions, and outline future priorities.
In his speech, Trump claimed the United States is respected again, and its "enemies are scared."
During the address on Tuesday, Trump mentioned the U.S. economy was growing, and law enforcement agencies were prepared.
"The roaring economy is roaring like never before, our enemies are scared, our military and police are stacked, and America is respected again, perhaps like never before," claimed Trump in his State of the Union address.
He also stated the United States will continue to progress, referring to the current period as the “golden age of America.”
According to Trump, the U.S. will celebrate its 250th Independence Day on July 4 in less than five months, which he called a historic milestone. "We've seen nothing yet. We're going to do better and better and better. This is the golden age of America."
