TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s Minister of Forestry Raja Juli Antoni revealed that President Prabowo Subianto fully supports ecosystem restoration efforts in Indonesia, viewing them as a crucial asset for the government to accelerate the recovery of degraded forest areas.
Raja Juli Antoni made the statement while attending the 2026 National Nature Conservation Day (HKAN) commemoration at the Angke Nature Tourism Park (TWA) in Jakarta on Monday—an event held jointly with officials from the Ministry of Forestry's Directorate General of Natural Resources and Ecosystem Conservation (KSDAE).
"To be frank, I personally feel I have received tremendous support from the President for this ecosystem restoration initiative," he said, as quoted by ANTARA.
He explained that Prabowo's strong commitment to environmental restoration had even been publicly affirmed on the international stage during his address to the UN General Assembly last year.
At that global forum, he continued, the President stated Indonesia's commitment to restoring 12 million hectares of degraded land—or critical land—nationwide, with 6.7 million hectares located within forest areas and 1.27 million hectares designated as conservation areas.
In addition to the commitment to restore degraded land, Prabowo has also demonstrated concrete support by ensuring adequate staffing and increasing the number of Forest Police personnel to strengthen oversight in conservation areas.
The goal of recruiting Forest Police members is to either reach a total of 21,000 personnel or secure the addition of at least 3,000 new personnel in the near future.
Raja Juli acknowledges that this ecosystem restoration is no easy task—especially given the state's budgetary constraints in independently carrying out all the targeted actions on a large scale—but this must not serve as an excuse to stop or adopt a pessimistic attitude.
"As a policymaker and regulator, the state has limitations. There are still other avenues we can explore—one of which is opening ourselves to collaboration with any party acting in good faith," said the Minister of Forestry.
