TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto stated that he holds full responsibility if Indonesians experience hunger. Prabowo claimed that he has been granted a mandate to safeguard the nation's sovereignty.
The Head of State made this statement during a speech at the inauguration of 1,061 village cooperatives, known as Kopdes Merah Putih, in Nganjuk, East Java.
"As the president who is responsible, the mandate holder of the people's sovereignty, I am the one sworn in. I am responsible. If this nation is hungry, I am the one responsible," Prabowo said on Saturday, May 16, 2026, as quoted from the Presidential Secretariat's YouTube channel.
The Gerindra Party Chairperson affirmed that no one else can be held accountable if the people of Indonesia suffer from hunger.
Hence, during his presidency, Prabowo assigned Agriculture Minister Amran Sulaiman and his staff to achieve food self-sufficiency within four years. However, Prabowo claimed that his aides in the Red and White Cabinet could reach this target in just one year.
During the event, Prabowo praised Amran's performance. Prabowo admitted he was previously unfamiliar with Amran. "I met him coincidentally. I asked two or three questions and realized this person has good thinking," Prabowo said.
Furthermore, Prabowo stated that he was the one who suggested to former President Joko Widodo that Amran re-assume the position of Minister of Agriculture.
"I suggested him to Pak Jokowi, and he was brought back to serve as Minister of Agriculture. And, as the British say, the rest is history," Prabowo said.
