TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s President Prabowo Subianto has set a budget of Rp 20 million (about US$) per unit for a national home renovation program, with part of the funds allocated to replacing roof materials under an initiative known as “gentengisasi,” or tile installation.
Speaking during a visit to the Environment-based and Educational Integrated Waste Processing Site (TPST BLE) in Banyumas, Central Java, on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, Prabowo said the government is considering the use of plastic-based roof tiles produced from recycled waste.
“The current home repair budget is Rp 20 million per house. So, we calculate about Rp 4 to 5 million for the tiles,” Prabowo said.
The TPST facility processes plastic waste into pellets, paving blocks, and roof tiles. According to the president, using recycled plastic tiles could help lower renovation costs, particularly for homes that still use zinc roofing.
“The tiles are decent, effective, and relatively cheap. This could possibly be included in the budget for home repair assistance,” he said.
Prabowo, who also chairs the Gerindra Party, said the government aims to phase out zinc roofing, citing durability and health concerns.
“We want to eliminate the use of corroded zinc, as it is ultimately unhealthy for those residing under it,” he said.
He also pointed to aesthetic considerations, arguing that replacing zinc roofs would improve the country’s visual appeal.
“We will restore Indonesia to its true beauty, making it a destination for tourism and a comfortable place to live,” Prabowo said.
The “gentengisasi” program was first introduced by Prabowo during the 2026 National Coordination Meeting of central and regional governments in Sentul, Bogor, West Java, on February 2. The initiative aims to gradually replace zinc roofing in residential areas with more durable and visually appealing materials.
