TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, spoke up about the data transfer deal between Indonesia and the United States (US). He stated that negotiations with the United States are still ongoing.
"Yes, the negotiation is still ongoing," said Prabowo in Jakarta on Wednesday night, July 24, 2025, as quoted from Antara.
Prior to this, the Spokesperson for the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, Haryo Limanseto, emphasized that the data transfer in question is part of the tariff agreement between Indonesia and the United States. The transferred data only covers commercial data and does not include personal or strategic data owned by the country.
"In the Joint Statement US-Indonesia, there is an issue of data transfer where the freedom to transfer data given to the US and other partner countries is focused on commercial data, not personal or individual data and data that is strategically regulated by laws or other related regulations," said Haryo in Jakarta on Wednesday.
According to him, personal data includes information such as name, age, or phone number, while the commercial data referred to in the issue includes company sales data or field research data. "For example, processing sales data in certain areas collected by companies, or banks, then analyzed for business needs. That is what is meant by commercial data," he said.
In the official statement issued by the White House, the United States and Indonesia will finalize commitments related to digital trade, services, and investment. One of the commitments made by Indonesia is to provide certainty regarding the ability to transfer personal data from its territory to the United States.
"Indonesia will also provide certainty regarding the ability to transfer personal data from its territory to the United States through the recognition that the United States is a country or jurisdiction that provides adequate data protection based on Indonesian law," the statement read.
