TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Statistics Indonesia (BPS) recorded a simultaneous price increase across both medium and premium rice grades in August 2026.

Speaking in Jakarta on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, BPS Deputy for Statistical Distribution and Services Ateng Hartono stated that average rice prices rose across milling, wholesale, and retail levels, as quoted by Antara. At the milling level, average prices increased by 1.32 percent month-to-month (mtm) and 5.52 percent year-on-year (yoy).

Broken down by quality at the milling stage, premium rice prices rose 1.22 percent mtm and 10.07 percent yoy. Meanwhile, medium rice prices climbed 1.48 percent mtm and 4.03 percent yoy. "On a year-on-year basis, the price surge for premium rice is higher than that of medium rice," Ateng noted.

Price increases for both medium and premium grades have been climbing steadily since February 2026. Regarding price trends at wholesale and retail levels in August 2026, wholesale inflation stood at 0.80 percent mtm and 4.28 percent yoy. Meanwhile, retail rice inflation was recorded at 0.42 percent mtm and 2.77 percent yoy.

"For context, the rice prices we convey represent average prices across various quality grades and cover all regions in Indonesia," Ateng said.

Meanwhile, the national Farmers' Terms of Trade (NTP) reached 129.19 in August 2026, up 1.05 percent from July 2026. This index rise was driven by a 1.14 percent increase in the index of prices received by farmers (It) to 165.66, outpacing the 0.09 percent rise in the index of prices paid by farmers (Ib) to 128.24.

Commodities driving up the index of prices received by farmers included unhusked rice (paddy), palm oil, rubber, and live broilers. Conversely, commodities influencing the index of prices paid by farmers included chicken meat, rice, yardlong beans, and mung beans.
