TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The American platform game, Roblox Corporation, has introduced two age-based account types, namely Roblox Kids and Roblox Select. This policy is part of the company's efforts to comply with child protection regulations in the digital space globally, including Government Regulation Number 17 of 2025 concerning Electronic System Governance for Child Protection (PP Tunas) which is applicable in Indonesia.
Vice President of Civility and Partnerships at Roblox, Tami Bhaumik, said the company has been in intensive communication with the Indonesian Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi) to ensure compliance with the applicable regulations.
However, Komdigi still finds loopholes in the new policy-especially related to communication features deemed risky for children-thus the government cannot yet declare that Roblox complies with PP Tunas.
The launch of these accounts is scheduled for early June 2026, with the aim of adjusting content access, communication settings, and parental controls based on user age. What are the main differences?
Roblox Kids Account
The Roblox Kids account is automatically given to users aged 5-12 who have passed age verification. This account can only access games with Minimal or Mild content labels that have undergone layered selection processes.
In addition, all communication features are not accessible by default. The application's interface is also distinguished by a special color to indicate that the account is a Roblox Kids account.
Roblox Select Account
Meanwhile, the Roblox Select account is intended for users aged 13-15. This account allows access to games with content labels up to Moderate that have been curated.
Roblox Select users can use chat features, but only with trusted friends and still require parental approval.
In addition to these differences, both account types are connected to an expanded parental control system. Parents can set content ratings, limit screen time, and manage in-game purchase access through a single integrated dashboard.
Both account types also come with age estimation-based face verification systems to ensure users access content according to their age group. "Meaning, when we introduce age estimates through faces, we want to know who is on the platform and their age, so we can ensure that the experience, communication, and types of games they access are in line with their age group," said Tami.
In Indonesia, all users under the age of 16 are required to obtain verified parental approval. Without verification, users cannot access chat features or games with ratings above Moderate.
Roblox also implements an account system that will change as users age. Roblox Kids accounts will automatically transition to Roblox Select when the user reaches the age of 13, and then become a standard account at the age of 16.
In addition, Roblox ensures that all content accessible to users under 16 has undergone moderation processes, including AI-based scanning, user report reviews, and real-time evaluation of content in games. The platform also integrates rating systems with Indonesian standards through IGRS and will transition to the global International Age Rating Coalition (IARC) framework.
