Russia Eyeing Indonesian Market with Priority Sector Exports

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Russia has identified five priority sectors for its exports to Indonesia: mining, oil and gas, agriculture, smart city technologies, and consumer products. This move comes alongside efforts to finalize a free trade agreement through the Eurasian Economic Commission.

The announcement was made by Veronika Nikishina, Director General of the Russian Export Center (REC), during the Russia-Indonesia Business Forum held at the Raffles Hotel in Jakarta on Monday, April 14.

“Indonesia is a major hub of economic development in Southeast Asia. From Russia’s perspective, the Indonesian market holds great promise and offers exciting opportunities for cooperation across all sectors,” said Nikishina.

The five sectors highlighted by Nikishina include mining, with a focus on digitalization and efficiency improvements; the oil and gas industry, supported by cutting-edge production technologies; agriculture, spanning grains to seafood; smart city and smart home technologies; and a range of consumer goods marketed under the “Made in Russia” label.

“We are actively promoting Russian products under the 'Made in Russia' slogan. It is an effort to bring more of Russia’s traditions to this country, with the hope that Russian goods will become popular and well-loved in Indonesia,” she explained.

Nikishina welcomed the progress in trade negotiations between Indonesia and the Eurasian Economic Commission, aimed at removing both tariff and non-tariff barriers. “Finalizing such an agreement—especially amid the global tariff wars—will greatly facilitate trade between our countries,” she noted.

Indonesia’s upcoming entry into BRICS, joining Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa in early 2025, is also seen as a key milestone.

“We believe that bilateral relations between Russia and Indonesia, ties with the Eurasian Economic Union, and developments within BRICS are all engines of economic growth—growth that cannot happen without Indonesia’s involvement,” she added.

The ongoing business mission is viewed as a strategic step toward fostering communication between entrepreneurs from both countries.

“Our primary task is to establish the broadest possible communication channels and ensure a steady exchange of information, so that we can fully understand the capabilities of each other’s business networks,” said Nikishina.

She also acknowledged that the current trade turnover, as recorded by Customs Statistics, still falls short of its full potential. “Indonesia has vast potential, and we are eager the Russian Export Center and our Indonesian partners to fully unlock that potential in the years ahead,” she said.
