TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Basarnas (National Search and Rescue Agency) has confirmed the safety of several hikers at Mount Semeru in Lumajang, East Java. Earlier, the mountain erupted on Wednesday, November 19, 2025. Basarnas Deputy of Operations and Preparedness, Edy Prakoso, stated that the rescue team in the field reported the condition of the hikers, who were camping in the Ranu Kumbolo area of Mount Semeru.

"The condition at Ranu Kumbolo is safe, but there is an advisory for them to descend," he said on Wednesday night, November 19, 2025.

Ranu Kumbolo is a crater lake at an altitude of 2,400 meters above sea level, approximately a six-hour trek from the summit of Mount Semeru via the Kalimati climbing route. Basarnas stated that there are at least 60 hikers and 15 guides stranded at Ranu Kumbolo due to foggy weather accompanied by rain.

Edy ensured that the Basarnas team has been put on standby. They are communicating with volunteers, guides, and officials from Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park to assist in the evacuation of the hikers from the Mount Semeru area. The evacuation is also being conducted in collaboration with joint teams from BNPB (National Disaster Management Agency), BPBD (Regional Disaster Management Agency), and the Indonesian National Armed Forces/Police (TNI/Polri) who were deployed shortly after the eruption of Mount Semeru yesterday afternoon. "The situation is safe," he said.

The Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) previously reported that Mount Semeru erupted at 16:00 WIB, with the observed eruption column reaching a height of about 2,000 meters above the peak.

During the eruption, Mount Semeru emitted a hot cloud with a sliding distance of up to seven kilometers from the summit in a grayish-colored ash column, with a thick intensity towards the north and northwest.

The eruption was recorded on the seismogram at the volcano monitoring post in Lumajang, with a maximum amplitude of 40 mm and a duration of approximately 16 minutes and 40 seconds. The eruption activity of Mount Semeru, which was observed yesterday afternoon, was confirmed to have ended at 18:11 WIB (Western Indonesia Time). However, the Geological Agency still determines the status of Level IV or alert to anticipate potential further activities.
