Shakira to Headline 2026 FIFA World Cup Opening in Mexico

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Excitement and anticipation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup are showing no signs of cooling down. As the countdown continues, Shakira has been revealed to perform at the opening ceremony in Mexico, with the tournament’s official song, “Dai Dai."

Announced on Thursday, the Colombian superstar will take over Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on June 11 alongside Burna Boy. With that in mind, the performance will take place before Mexico and South Africa face off in the opening match of the World Cup.

According to ESPN, the song title “Dai Dai” comes from the Italian phrase meaning “let’s go” or “come on.” In celebration of that spirit, the ceremony will also feature reggaeton star J Balvin and South African singer-songwriter Tyla.

Estadio Azteca is one of three venues set to host opening ceremonies. In Toronto, Canada, singer-songwriter Michael Bublé and Alanis Morissette will perform on June 12. That same day, SoFi Stadium in the United States will welcome pop star Katy Perry and rapper Future to kick off the festivities.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the biggest edition in history, featuring 48 teams and 104 matches in total. However, the grand stage is nothing new for Shakira, as this year's appearance is far from her first.

The singer is already synonymous with the timeless phenomenon of “Waka Waka,” the official anthem of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, and has also been involved in the 2006 and 2014 editions of the tournament.
