TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Marc Marquez, the Ducati Lenovo rider, was overwhelmed with emotion after securing the 2025 MotoGP World Championship title. He sealed the championship after finishing second in the main race at the Motegi Circuit in Japan on Sunday, September 28. With five races still remaining, his insurmountable points lead guaranteed him the title.
"Today I couldn't control the emotions," Marquez told reporters, as quoted by Crash. "On the last lap I was crying inside the helmet, it was difficult to even see the brake points!"
The Long Road Back to Glory
The Spanish rider had to wait five grueling years to once again feel like a world champion. After his last title in 2019, his career was derailed by a broken arm in 2020, followed by four subsequent operations before he finally recovered in 2022.
Even after recovering from the arm injury, his performance struggled due to recurrent diplopia (double vision) problems. His challenges persisted with the non-competitive Honda motorcycle before he moved to Ducati.
Marquez's victory sets a unique record: no premier class world champion since 1949 has had to wait longer between titles. This latest win brings his total number of MotoGP premier class titles to seven, equaling Valentino Rossi's record. He now holds a total of nine championship titles across all classes.
This latest crown adds to his remarkable legacy, which also includes records for being the first rookie champion since Kenny Roberts and the youngest-ever champion at 20 years and 266 days.
Reflecting on Suffering and Triumph
Describing his emotional outburst after crossing the finish line, Marquez contrasted his recent years with his early career. "Six years ago, I didn't know what suffering was. I just tasted the glory, all my career, since 2010," he explained.
He acknowledged past injuries, but noted they were brief. "It's true that I had some injuries, but it was always like 3 months, 4 months recovery and win again."
The consecutive setbacks, however, were devastating. "So when you have four years, with four different surgeries on the arm. Also, I broke other bones during that time, and had double vision twice. It was super difficult," Marquez confided.
The 32-year-old champion found the strength to rise again after accepting his situation. "I’m at peace with myself now. Everything is done, but I have the same ambition!" he affirmed, reminding everyone that his current contract with Ducati runs through the end of 2026.
