TEMPO.CO, Jakarta A fresh exchange of fire broke out between Thailand and Cambodia on Tuesday, February 24, 2026. The Thai military accused its neighbor of violating a December ceasefire, while Phnom Penh denied any use of weapons.

The decades-long border dispute between the Southeast Asian countries erupted into several clashes last year, leaving dozens dead and more than a million displaced in July and December 2025.

The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in late December, but tensions on the border remain. Both sides accuse each other of violating the ceasefire.

According to CNA, the Thai military said Cambodian troops fired a 40mm grenade near a Thai patrol in the border province of Sisaket on Tuesday. This attack prompted retaliatory fire, according to a statement.

Thai military spokesman Winthai Suvaree accused Cambodia of violating the ceasefire agreement that ended three weeks of clashes.

Cambodia's Information Minister, Neth Pheaktra, said the accusations were completely false and designed to mislead public opinion and inflame tensions. No Thai personnel were injured on Tuesday, the military said.

"Following the incident, Thai troops responded by firing M79 grenade launchers in the direction of the gunfire as a warning and in self-defense," according to a Cambodian statement.

The Thai military said the incident may have been caused by Cambodian troop rotations, with new personnel lacking familiarity with regulations and command and control. Cambodia said Thai troops were still occupying civilian areas, challenging the December ceasefire.

Neth Pheaktra said claims that his military fired on patrolling Thai troops were fabricated and grossly distorted by the facts. He reiterated Cambodia's firm commitment to the December ceasefire and a previous, brief ceasefire agreement from October.

"Cambodia is deeply concerned that unilateral allegations made without mutual verification, consultation, or verification of facts risk misrepresenting the situation on the ground and undermining mutual trust," he said.

Cambodian Defense Ministry spokesperson Maly Socheata said that liaison teams from the Cambodian and Thai militaries immediately addressed the issue after "reports of explosions and gunfire on the Thai side."

"Cambodian officials have categorically informed their Thai counterparts that Cambodian forces did not fire any weapons as alleged," Maly Socheata said in a statement.
