TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Thai government on Thursday sought "clarification" from Iran and lodged a protest after an attack on a Thai-flagged ship the day before in the critical Strait of Hormuz, which resulted in at least three crew members going missing.
The Mayuree Naree, carrying 23 Thai sailors, was attacked amidst ongoing US and Israel air strikes against Iran and Tehran's retaliation against US assets in the region.
The Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned Iran's ambassador to Bangkok, Nassereddin Heidari, “to seek clarification” on the incident, as reported by Thai Enquirer, as quoted by Antara.
The ship was struck while en route from Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates to India.
Immediately after the attack, the Omani navy rescued 20 crew members while search and rescue operations continued for the three missing sailors believed to be working in the ship's engine room, the report added.
The Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs also called for restraint after the ship was struck, expressing “grave concern” over the escalating crisis in the Middle East.
The crisis poses “serious threats to the lives and safety of innocent civilians in countries in and beyond the region, including Thai nationals,” the ministry said, cautioning that the conflict also affects freedom of navigation after the Thai ship was targeted.
The incident occurred amidst US and Israel's attacks on Iran launched since February 28, which have killed around 1,300 people, including former top Iranian leader Ali Khamenei, dozens of schoolgirls, many other civilians, and several high officials.
Iran retaliated with drone and missile attacks targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and the Gulf states hosting US military assets.
The attacks occurred as Iran effectively blocked the Strait of Hormuz since March, and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, on Wednesday, stated that any ships seeking to pass through the waterway must obtain permission from Tehran.
Separately, Bangkok continues to evacuate Thai nationals from the Middle East. A new group of 34 Thai nationals evacuated from Iran arrived in Thailand on Thursday after traveling through Turkey.
According to Anadolu, at least 19 people from Asian countries have been killed or gone missing since the conflict broke out on February 28.
They include four individuals from Bangladesh, three each from Pakistan, Thailand, and India, and one each from China, Nepal, and the Philippines, while three individuals from Indonesia are still missing.
