TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Thai government, through the Airports Authority of Thailand (AOT), has announced plans to increase the Passenger Service Charge (PSC) for international travelers. As reported by the Bangkok Post, starting June 20, 2026, the fee, which was previously 739 baht (approximately Rp399,000), will increase by 53 percent to 1,120 baht (Rp604,000) per person. This policy has received approval from the Civil Aviation Board as a strategic measure to strengthen the airport authority's financial resilience.
This fare increase applies to six major airports: Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, Phuket, Hat Yai, Chiang Mai, and Chiang Rai. Meanwhile, the fare for domestic passengers remains unchanged at 130 baht (approximately Rp70,000).
As reported by Tour and Travel, international travelers need not worry about unexpected additional charges at the airport because the PSC fee will be directly integrated into the flight ticket price during booking, simplifying the departure administration process.
Former Democratic Party deputy leader Samart Ratchapolsitte emphasized that fare increases must be accompanied by tangible improvements to facilities. Samart stated that if passengers can clearly see the improvements, he believes most will be willing to pay. "In short, higher prices are not the problem, as long as they provide value to passengers," he said, as reported by the Bangkok Post.
He highlighted the importance of service improvements such as shorter immigration queues and faster baggage systems as a trade-off for the fare increase.
AOT President Paweena Jariyathitipong explained that revenue from the fare increase will be allocated to major infrastructure projects, including the construction of the South Terminal at Suvarnabhumi Airport, worth more than 200 billion baht (approximately Rp 108 trillion). The funds will also be used for technological modernization, such as the provision of self-check-in kiosks and biometric systems. The goal is to ensure Thai airports remain competitive in handling the surge in international passenger volume.
Although service fees in Thailand will be higher than at other world-class airports such as Incheon in Seoul or Haneda in Tokyo, authorities assured that the impact on total travel costs will be minimal. The Thai government hopes this strategic investment in aviation infrastructure will improve operational efficiency and provide greater comfort for travelers.
