Trump Strikes Back: China Faces New 125% Import Tariffs

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President of the United States (US), Donald Trump has stated that he will soon raise the import tariffs on products originating from China to 125 percent. He made the statement on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, as the trade dispute between Washington and Beijing intensifies.

"Based on China's lack of respect for the global market, I hereby raise the United States' tariffs on China to 125 percent, effective immediately," Trump said in his post on the Truth Social platform.

Trump also criticized China to promptly become aware and not to 'play around' with the US.

"One day, hopefully in the near future, China will realize that the times of deceiving the United States and other countries are no longer acceptable and cannot be sustained," he said.

According to Anadolu, Trump's statement included an announcement that more than 75 other countries would be granted a 90-day suspension starting from Wednesday, April 9, 2025. Previously, these countries were scheduled to be subjected to higher tariffs above the 10 percent base. In some cases, the tariffs could be much higher.

Trump stated that the suspension was granted because these 75 countries have contacted their US counterparts to seek solutions regarding trade issues, trade barriers, tariffs, currency manipulation, and non-monetary tariffs.

He also added that these countries have not taken any retaliatory actions against the United States in any form.

"I have authorized a 90-day pause and set reciprocal tariffs much lower, at 10 percent, which also take effect immediately," he said.

In another post, Trump reiterated his decision. "Tariffs of 125 percent for China. A 90-day suspension and reciprocal tariffs of 10 percent for other countries. Effective immediately," wrote Trump.

According to Arab News, Trump's decision appears to be an effort to narrow the unprecedented trade war between the US and most of the world's countries.

The S&P 500 stock index surged 9.5 percent after the announcement, but the drama regarding Trump's tariffs is far from over as the Trump administration prepares to engage in negotiations between countries.

Earlier, Trump imposed very high import tariffs of up to 104 percent for all goods from China. This rule will take effect starting from Wednesday, April 9, 2025, as announced by the White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt a day earlier.

China is prepared to raise tariffs by 34 percent on Wednesday for goods from the US. These tariffs apply as retaliation by China against the very high import duties from the US.

However, Trump added another 50 percent import duty from China after Beijing did not withdraw its promise to impose a retaliatory tariff of 34 percent on goods from the US.

Previously on Tuesday, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce said that they strongly opposed an additional 50 percent tariff. China called it one mistake after another, and promised to retaliate against the US.

China is the second-largest exporter to America, with a total shipment of goods worth US$439 billion. In contrast, the US exported goods worth US$144 billion to China. These combined tariffs threaten to harm the domestic industry and potentially lead to massive job cuts.
