Types of YouTube Content That Cannot Be Monetized

9 hours ago 3

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - YouTube is set to restrict monetization for content that is mass-produced and repetitive starting today, Tuesday, July 15, 2025. The policy is being enforced to ensure that uploaded and monetized content is genuinely original.

This new policy is in line with the initial goal of the YouTube Partner Program (YPP), which emphasizes the importance of authenticity and originality in creators' work to be eligible for monetization. This update is also a response to the increasing number of reposted content that does not originate from the original creators.

"This update better reflects what 'inauthentic' content looks like today," stated Google in a post uploaded on YouTube's help page on Tuesday, July 8, 2025.

However, the policy has raised concerns among some creators, especially those who create reaction videos or content featuring clips from other videos. They are worried that the new rules will limit their monetization opportunities.

In response, YouTube's Editorial Head Rene Ritchie conveyed that the policy is merely a refinement of existing rules. He explained that even currently, creators are required to make significant changes to non-original content in order to be eligible for monetization.

"The editorial update to this policy aims to better identify content that is mass-produced or repetitive," stated Ritchie in a video. According to him, such content has not met monetization requirements for years and is often considered spam by viewers.

What Kind of Channels Can Be Monetized on YouTube?

For those who want to turn their YouTube channel into a money-making machine, it requires three main prerequisites to achieve that: authentic content, originality, and perseverance.

In addition, YouTube will monetize channels that present original, engaging, and advertiser-friendly content. Examples include educational tutorials, entertaining vlogs, insightful reviews, or captivating stories. All these types of content can succeed on YouTube and pave the way to monetization.

Types of Content That Cannot Be Monetized on YouTube

As reported by vidIQ, YouTube is tightening its monetization rules by rejecting various types of content deemed non-original, repetitive, or in violation of community guidelines. One of the most common forms of violation is the reuse of others' content without adding new value, such as original comments, different visuals, or creative editing.

This practice is often carried out by creators who only repost viral clips, memes, excerpts from movies or TV shows, and even music without permission. YouTube refuses to pay for such content as it is deemed unfair to the original creators and is at risk of copyright infringement.

Furthermore, repetitive content does not meet monetization requirements. Videos with the same content repeated multiple times, such as automatic slideshows with identical formats, long-duration natural sounds, or the use of text-to-speech software to read others' content, are considered to not provide an engaging viewing experience. YouTube and advertisers seek fresh, creative, and authentic content, not mass-produced content devoid of human touch.

Equally important, channels that violate community guidelines cannot be monetized. Content containing hate speech, harassment, conspiracy theories, promotion of illegal substances, or even endangering children will be outright rejected. YouTube has a responsibility to keep its ecosystem safe and clean, and to ensure that ads do not appear on content that damages brand reputation.

With this policy, YouTube wants to reaffirm that only creators with original content, variety, and compliance with guidelines are deserving of earning from the platform.
