TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The internet war between SEAblings and Knetz has escalated rapidly since its first round in early February 2026. What started as a dispute over camera etiquette in a concert has snowballed into widespread derogatory comments, hovering over sensitive topics such as skin color, misogyny, and socioeconomic status.

What Do SEAblings and Knetz Mean?

Knetz, short for Korean netizens, is a long-standing term used to refer to internet users from South Korea who actively engage in online discussions.

Initially, the term Knetz did not carry a negative sentiment as it was simply a descriptor for a vocal digital demographic. However, it has recently become associated with heated cross-border exchanges. In this context, a faction of South Korean netizens has been involved in escalating online disputes with users across several Southeast Asian countries.

The term SEAblings, meanwhile, emerged almost simultaneously with these growing tensions. On the social media platform X, users have begun identifying as SEAblings, a portmanteau of “SEA” (Southeast Asia) and “siblings.”

Before the name gained global traction, Indonesian netizens were the most vocal participants. They positioned themselves between Malaysian fans and Knetz, stepping in to defend their “Malay fams” from mounting online criticism.

As the exchanges intensified, users from neighboring nations, including the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam, rallied together under the collective persona of SEAblings.

The Issues Between SEAblings and Knetz

On January 31, 2026, the South Korean band Day6 performed in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The concert quickly became a flashpoint for controversy after several Korean attendees, identifying themselves as fansites, were reportedly seen bringing professional-grade cameras into the venue despite clear prohibitions from the organizers.

Frustrated by what they described as disruptive behavior, Malaysian fans took to X to air their grievances and outline the rule violations they witnessed. Rather than accepting the criticism constructively, a number of Knetz fired back with responses that intensified the backlash, turning a local complaint into a cross-border dispute.

Subsequently, the conversation expanded beyond the concert. Public figures from both sides were dragged into the fray, including Indonesian artists such as No Na and Baskara Mahendra. Stereotypes regarding skin color, economic conditions, and cultural differences have since further fueled the dispute, pushing it toward a larger global scale.
