TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Japan national team suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat to Brazil in a World Cup knock-out game. Amidst that disappointing moment, however, global fans were captivated by the brilliantly talented goalkeeper Zion Suzuki.

USA-born Zion Suzuki first grabbed the spotlight after his heroics in Japan's second group-stage match against Tunisia. At Estadio Monterrey, Japan secured a dominant 4-0 victory.

Who is Zion Suzuki?

Zion Suzuki is Japan's first-choice goalkeeper for the 2026 World Cup. Despite being only 23 years old, he has earned widespread recognition for his sharp reflexes and athleticism.

Adding to his skillset as a professional footballer, Zion Suzuki also stands out for his unique background. He’s one of the few non-Japan-born players, taking his first breaths in Newark, New Jersey, USA, to a Ghanaian father and a Japanese mother.

His family moved to Urawa, Japan when he was a child, where he grew up. This then led to his journey into the world of football through the Urawa Red Diamonds academy.

As Marca noted, the goalkeeper boasts impressive physical attributes, standing 1.9 meters (6 ft 3 in) tall with aerial dominance and excellent footwork, helping him win domestic titles and the AFC Champions League.

Why does Zion Suzuki play for Japan at the 2026 World Cup?

Zion Suzuki plays for Japan at the 2026 World Cup because he has committed to representing the Samurai Blue since his youth career. Although he was eligible to represent the US by birth and Ghana through his father, Suzuki chose Japan—the country of his mother’s heritage where he also grew up.

According to FourFourTwo and The Independent, Zion Suzuki has represented Japan since the U-15 level, made his senior debut in 2022, and has remained the team’s first-choice goalkeeper. There has never been any indication that he considered representing another country.

What club does Zion Suzuki play for?

As per Bolavip US, Zion Suzuki plays for Parma in Italy's Serie A. He joined the club in 2024, signing a five-year  contract that runs through 2029. Parma reportedly paid around €7.5 million for his transfer, making him the club’s first-ever Japanese goalkeeper.
