WHO Says Israel's Blockade Prevents 75% of UN Aid, Worsens Gaza Crisis

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated that 75 percent of United Nations (UN) missions were denied entry to the Gaza Strip due to Israel's blockade and attacks.

In a press conference on Thursday, as quoted by Antara, Ghebreyesus warned that Israel's strict blockade, enforced since March 2, has resulted in humanitarian aid supplies, including food and medicine, being unable to enter Gaza.

This situation has worsened the humanitarian conditions in Gaza, exposing the local population to increased threats of famine, malnutrition, as well as shortages of clean water, proper housing, and medical services.

The risk of disease and death has also escalated among the Gaza residents due to these circumstances.

Ghebreyesus stated that Israel's aggression towards Gaza's health infrastructure has not ceased and has led to the deaths of over 400 healthcare workers since October 2023.

He highlighted the worst attack on healthcare personnel occurring on March 23, when Israel targeted a medical aid convoy in Gaza, resulting in the deaths of 15 Palestinian medics and humanitarian aid workers.

The WHO leader reiterated the importance of ending the blockade of the Gaza Strip immediately, protecting the healthcare system, and ensuring unrestricted access for humanitarian aid throughout Gaza.

Ghebreyesus also urged the resumption of daily routine medical evacuations and an immediate ceasefire to end the suffering of the Palestinian people.

In an update on Thursday, the Gaza health ministry stated that at least 1,522 Palestinians had been killed in the recent Israeli attacks. This brings the total death toll since the start of Israel's genocide in Gaza to 50,886 people, the majority being women and children.

On October 7, 2023, Hamas launched an attack that, according to official Israeli figures, resulted in the deaths of 1,218 people. However, former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant acknowledged that a significant number of those fatalities were caused by Israeli Apache helicopter strikes.

These strikes were carried out under the Hannibal Directive, a controversial military protocol intended to prevent Israeli citizens from being taken alive by enemy forces.
