TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - One popular and highly relevant educational approach to the needs of the modern industry is STEM Education. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. As reported on Tempo, STEM learning is an approach in the education system that integrates four main disciplines, namely Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.
This approach is designed to provide students with the skills they need to face the challenges of the modern world where technology and innovation are rapidly evolving. In contrast to traditional learning methods that separate each subject, STEM connects concepts from various disciplines to create a more practical and applicable learning experience.
The STEM Education approach can be implemented in schools through various practical activities involving experiments, simulations, and creative projects. There are various benefits of STEM for students, not only in terms of academics, but also in developing skills that are useful for their future life and careers.
Benefits of STEM
Here are some of the main benefits students gain from STEM-based education:
1. Developing Critical Thinking, Creativity, Communication, and Collaboration Skills
STEM Education encourages students to not only passively receive information, but also to think critically and find solutions to various challenges. For example, in the project of designing a simple robot, students have to discuss within the team, divide tasks, and present their results. This process naturally enhances collaboration and communication skills.
2. Training Students to Find Innovative Solutions to Various Problems
STEM-based education not only teaches theory, but also how to apply it in the real world. This problem-solving ability is crucial, both for daily life and in the workplace, where individuals who can think in a solution-oriented manner are highly sought after.
3. Enhancing Career Readiness in the Field of Technology and Science
STEM-based industries continue to grow, with an increasing demand for workers in the fields of technology, science, engineering, and mathematics. Through STEM education, students gain:
In-depth understanding of technological and scientific concepts that they can use in various fields of work. Direct experience with STEM projects, which adds value when applying for jobs in the technology and engineering industries. The ability to adapt to industry developments, such as artificial intelligence (AI), data science, and robotics.
4. Enhancing Students' Global Competitiveness
In the era of globalization, competition in the job market is becoming increasingly fierce. STEM education helps students to have skills that make them more competitive internationally, such as understanding modern technology relevant to the global industry. Analytical and solution-oriented thinking skills, which are highly sought after in the business and industrial world. Readiness to face new challenges, both in the academic and professional world.
MR. D.I.Y. for Indonesia has launched the 'Inspiring the Innovative Generation' movement, an initiative focused on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM)-based learning to promote interactive learning and the development of students' skills. This initiative is designed to provide a more accessible and enjoyable STEM learning experience for more children in various regions of Indonesia. We aim to broaden access for the future generation to learn, experiment, and develop," said MR. D.I.Y. Indonesia's CEO Edwin Cheah in a press release on April 15, 2026.
This initiative began in Waingapu, East Sumba as a priority development area (3T) on April 10. East Sumba represents many developing areas in Eastern Indonesia that are the focus of national development, especially in the education sector. In the midst of efforts to equalize access, relevant and practical STEM-based learning can complement the continuously growing education ecosystem in the region.
The activity involved 341 students from 10 schools in East Sumba, with the support of the SUKA Indonesia Foundation to ensure the implementation of a program relevant to local needs and to provide positive impact for both students and educators. East Sumba Vice Regent Yonathan Hani emphasized the importance of added value with STEM-based learning. "We see that interactive and practical learning approaches are becoming increasingly important to complement the learning process in schools," he said.
