TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Elon Musk's social networking platform, X, is reportedly planning to change its monetization scheme for influencers and creators.
According to TechCrunch, X will phase out its current Revenue Sharing program and replace it with a program called Original Content Rewards. The main change in the new program emphasizes content originality.
X will no longer be accepting new participants for the Revenue Sharing program, while existing participants can still earn income until September 7. Starting September 8, they can apply to join the new program.
Creators who wish to participate must still subscribe to one of the X Premium plans and meet several requirements related to follower count and views.
Other requirements include having 500 verified followers and at least 500,000 Home Timeline views from verified users within 90 days.
In this new program, which emphasizes originality, X stated that content can range from original reports and analysis, user-generated photos and videos, to memes and graphics they design themselves.
Commentary content is also still considered. However, X emphasized that if someone's content routinely uses material created by others, that user must provide meaningful original value for the content to meet X's original content guidelines.
X also provided several examples of content it deemed unoriginal, such as posts copied from other accounts, content downloaded from another account and then re-uploaded to one's own account, or content reposted without meaningful transformation.
X representative Allegra Jacchia said the current program "had reached a point where the incentives were misaligned."
Creators, Jacchia continued, should focus on bringing new and original content to the platform, not "maximizing payouts."
Jacchia added that X will continue to refine the program, improve the model used, and raise the bar over time.
“We could have kept adding more rules and exceptions, but ultimately the better decision was to start fresh and build a program designed from day one to reward originality," Jacchia said.
This announcement follows several attempts by X to improve the Revenue Sharing program. One such effort, launched in April, involved reducing payouts to aggregator accounts and accounts deemed to be using "clickbait."
However, these efforts also sparked complaints from several popular accounts that had benefited from the existing system.
Musk even reversed some of these changes, including a policy that gave greater weight to a creator's local audience in calculating payouts, after receiving backlash from users.
