A 20-year-old Palestinian woman died of malnutrition in Italy just a day after being evacuated from the Gaza Strip, local media reported on Saturday, August 16, 2025.
According to ANSA news agency as cited by Antara, the woman named Marah Abu Zuhri died on Friday in Pisa after arriving in Italy on a military plane from the 46th Air Brigade as part of Italy's humanitarian operation.
It was also mentioned that Zuhri was in a severely malnourished condition when the plane landed on Thursday night along with other Palestinian patients and their families.
Zuhri, accompanied by her mother, was immediately taken to Cisanello Hospital due to her critical condition.
In a statement, the Pisa University Hospital (AOUP) expressed its "profound condolences" for the death of the young woman.
Hunger and malnutrition continue to claim lives in the Gaza Strip amidst Israel's blockade that halts the supply of food and medicine.
The death toll due to starvation in the Palestinian enclave has now reached 240 people, including 107 children.
Since May 27, Israeli forces have killed 1,898 Palestinian civilians and injured 14,113 others as they seek humanitarian aid.
Israel's tightened blockade since March, with the closure of all crossings, has plunged 2.4 million Gaza residents into severe humanitarian crisis marked by hunger, diseases, and the collapse of basic services.
In November 2024, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant for Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu and former defense minister Yoav Gallant over allegations of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
Israel also faces genocide charges in the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for the war they launched in the region.
