5.5-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Indonesia's Sunda Strait, No Tsunami Threat

1 week ago 55

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that the 5.5 magnitude earthquake that struck the Sunda Strait, several kilometers off Banten Province, early Wednesday morning did not have the potential to trigger a tsunami.

The BMKG's Director of Earthquakes and Tsunami, Wijayanto, stated in Jakarta on Wednesday that, based on updated parameter analysis, the earthquake was caused by plate subduction activity.

"The earthquake had a thrust fault mechanism, with an epicenter at a depth of 43 kilometers. Modeling results do not indicate a tsunami potential," he said.

He explained that the earthquake's epicenter was located at 6.83° South Latitude and 105.04° East Longitude, or precisely at sea, 62 kilometers southwest of Sumur, Pandeglang Regency, Banten.

The BMKG Earthquake Directorate Team confirmed that based on the estimated shock map and reports from the public, the effects of the vibrations caused by this earthquake were felt in the Sumur District area - a number of other areas in Pandeglang - Bogor Regency, West Java with an intensity scale of IV-III MMI.

A magnitude IV MMI indicates that the shaking during the day was felt by many people inside their homes, and some outside, causing pottery to break, windows or doors to rattle, and walls to vibrate. A magnitude III MMI intensity indicates that the shaking felt as if a large truck were passing by.

No signs of aftershock activity were detected by the BMKG system as of 3:05 a.m. Western Indonesian Time (WIB).

The BMKG urged the public to remain calm and not be influenced by the spread of unverified rumors.

Residents in the earthquake-affected areas were reminded to thoroughly inspect their homes and avoid buildings with cracks or damage caused by the earthquake to ensure their safety.
