TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.9 shook eastern Japan, including Tokyo, early Sunday morning.

The quake disrupted transportation services and caused injuries, according to the meteorological agency and local authorities.

Striking at around 2:00 a.m. local time, the earthquake was centered in the southern part of Ibaraki Prefecture at a depth of 68 kilometers.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) stated that the earthquake did not trigger a tsunami.

The quake registered an intensity of "5-lower" on the Japanese seismic scale—which peaks at 7—in parts of Ibaraki Prefecture and central Tokyo.

Train services faced delays at the start of operations following the quake, according to JR East and other operators.

Several people were reported injured, including a young man and a woman in her 70s in Saitama (north of Tokyo) and three people in Kawasaki (just south of the capital), according to local fire departments.

In Tokyo's Koto Ward, a water main burst; the Tokyo metropolitan government is investigating whether the damage is linked to the earthquake.

Shaking with an intensity of "5-lower" was also recorded in parts of Saitama and Chiba prefectures.

In Tokyo, the same intensity was recorded in Adachi Ward, while other areas of the capital experienced weaker shaking.

Nuclear power plant operators reported no abnormalities at the Tokai No. 2 Nuclear Power Plant in Ibaraki Prefecture, nor at the disaster-stricken Fukushima Daiichi plant or the Fukushima Daini plant in northeastern Japan.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi stated via social media that she had instructed officials to assess the extent of the damage and provide timely information to the public.

The Japan Meteorological Agency urged the public to remain vigilant regarding the possibility of further earthquakes with an intensity of "5-lower" over the coming week, particularly within the next two to three days. The earthquake that occurred on Sunday was felt across a wide area of Japan, including the country's northeastern and central regions. The JMA issued an early earthquake warning immediately after the shaking began.
