Iran Doubles Weapons, Defense Equipment Production in One Year

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Iran doubled its production of weapons and defense equipment over the course of a year, Iranian Deputy Defense Minister Reza Talaei-Nik said on Saturday.

"In the year since the start of the Twelve-Day War—specifically from June of last year to June of this year—the production of weapons and defense equipment has doubled," Talaei-Nik said, as quoted by the Tasnim news agency and cited by Antara.

On the eve of June 18, Tehran and Washington signed a memorandum to end the conflict that had begun on February 28.

However, on July 8, US President Donald Trump announced that the ceasefire was no longer in effect. Since then, US forces have launched a series of attacks against Iran.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) described the attacks as retaliation for Iran's actions against commercial vessels traversing the Strait of Hormuz.

Iranian forces subsequently retaliated by launching attacks on US bases in the Middle East.

On July 12, Iran announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz until US interference in the region ceases, following renewed hostilities between the conflicting parties.

A day later, Trump stated that the US would act as the "guardian" of the Strait of Hormuz. He also reimposed a US blockade on Iranian ports.

On Thursday, Trump said that Tehran had squandered the opportunity to reach an agreement with Washington. Consequently, the US launched a large-scale economic operation against Iran.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi described the operation as an attempt to divert attention from the crises facing the US itself—a move he claimed would ultimately lead to an even greater defeat for Washington.
