TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia state-owned railway agency, PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI), recorded 405,814 international tourist passengers between January and July 2026. This figure represents a 3.86 percent increase compared to the same period in 2025, when the number stood at 390,745.
KAI Vice President of Corporate Communication Anne Purba stated that the majority of trips were to and from major cities on the island of Java. "Tourists can travel from one city to another via scheduled services that connect to various destinations," she said in a written statement on Saturday, August 22, 2026.
The number of international tourist passengers over the past seven months continues a growth trend observed in previous years. In 2022, 300,708 people used long-distance train services.
The figure rose to 580,995 in 2023. It reached 669,226 in 2024 and 694,123 in 2025, while the count had already reached 405,814 by July 2026.
In July of this year, PT KAI recorded 96,940 international passengers. This represents an 8.28 percent increase compared to July 2025, when the figure was 89,526. The following are the 10 departure stations with the highest volume of foreign tourists in July 2026:
1. Yogyakarta: 21,933 people
2. Gambir: 18,480 people
3. Bandung: 9,330 people
4. Surabaya Gubeng: 4,194 people
5. Pasarsenen: 4,093 people
6. Malang: 3,661 people
7. Semarang Tawang Bank Jateng: 3,167 people
8. Probolinggo: 3,061 people
9. Lempuyangan: 1,977 people
10. Solo Balapan: 1,808 people
Anne Purba stated that these cities connect various destinations and tourist attractions. KAI will continue to maintain the quality of service provided to passengers. "To ensure the train travel experience is increasingly comfortable and memorable for tourists as they explore Indonesia," she said.
