TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Flight attendants of Air Canada continue to strike, demanding a pay raise. The strike persists despite an order from the labor board, supported by the government, to return to work by Sunday, August 17, 2025, at 2 p.m. They describe the action as unconstitutional.

The Canadian Union of Public Employees stated in a release on Sunday that its members would continue the strike. They invited Air Canada to return to the table to negotiate a fair deal.

As reported by Al Jazeera, Canada's largest airline will resume flights on Monday night. The strike has affected around 130,000 travelers worldwide per day during the peak of the summer travel season.

The Canadian government on Saturday urged the more than 10,000 flight attendants at the airline to return to work. The Canadian Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) was instructed to order binding arbitration.

The Canadian Labour Code empowers the government with the authority to request the CIRB to impose binding arbitration to protect the economy. The CIRB has requested Air Canada, but it was opposed by the flight attendants who are part of the workers' union.

It is unusual for a workers' union to defy CIRB's order. It is unclear what options the government has if the workers' union continues its strike.

Air Canada flight attendants went on strike on Saturday for the first time since 1985. The strike occurred after months of unsuccessful contract negotiations.

Natasha Stea, an Air Canada flight attendant and local union leader, stated that other workers' unions joined the picket lines of flight attendants in a solidarity action in Toronto on Sunday. "They are supporting us today because they see our rights being eroded," Stea said.

The most controversial issue is the workers' union's demand for compensation for time spent on the ground between flights and when assisting passengers during boarding. The flight attendants are mostly paid only when their planes are moving.

Cabin crews are also unhappy with the proposed pay raises by Air Canada and other compensation terms. They argue that the pay raise is insufficient to keep up with inflation or match the federal minimum wage.
