TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Several Berlin state ministries announced on Monday, August 17, that access to the government IT network for several state ministries had been cut off following a security breach.

The office stated that an investigation team is working to address the incident and determine its scope. "Investigations have revealed a security breach in the Berlin state network. All relevant agencies are working around the clock to secure the state network," according to the office's statement, as quoted by ANTARA.

On Friday, authorities cut off access to the network for several ministries, including those responsible for climate action, development, and housing, as a precautionary measure. Officials did not disclose whether the departments remained fully operational, whether any data was stolen, or who might be behind the attack.

The Berlin Public Prosecutor's Office, the State Criminal Police Office, and the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) are investigating the incident.

"The security of the state network is the top priority. For investigative reasons, no further specific information regarding the scope or background of the incident can be provided at this time," the statement said.

The affected system, known as BeLa, is a secure, high-speed fiber-optic network connecting approximately 600 government locations and public facilities across the city-state. ITDZ Berlin fully operates the system.

The security breach occurred amidst repeated warnings regarding the growing threat of cyber and hybrid attacks targeting public institutions, businesses, and critical infrastructure.

In June, Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said, "Germany is not at war, yet we are a daily target of hybrid warfare," describing such threats as "21st-century shadow warfare."
