TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Tremors were felt in parts of Banten on Wednesday in the early hours. The cause was an earthquake in the waters of Sunda Strait. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded it as a 5.3 magnitude earthquake.
The epicenter was precisely located at sea, 62 kilometers southwest of Sumur, Pandeglang, Banten, at a depth of 43 kilometers. BMKG's modeling results show that this earthquake did not have the potential to cause a tsunami.
"The earthquake that occurred was a shallow earthquake due to subduction activity," said a statement from Wijayanto, the Director of Earthquake and Tsunami at BMKG, following the earthquake on Wednesday, July 8, 2026.
A subduction zone, where tectonic plates collide, is also known as a megathrust zone. These zones have the potential to produce strong earthquakes.
According to BMKG, the earthquake was most strongly felt on the IV MMI scale, in Sumur. On this scale, the earthquake was comparable to a daytime quake that many people experience inside their homes. It caused pottery to break, windows and doors to rattle, and walls to creak.
As usual, BMKG urges the public to remain calm and to stay away from buildings that are cracked or damaged by the earthquake. As of 03:05 AM local time, BMKG's monitoring has not detected any aftershocks.
