TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Chinese Red Cross has provided US$200,000 (around Rp3.3 billion) in emergency humanitarian aid to the Iranian Red Crescent to support the parents of students killed in an attack on a girls’ elementary school in the southern Iranian city of Minab.
As quoted by The Hindu, China’s Foreign Ministry said the funds were intended for “condolences and compensation” for the families of the victims.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun described the strike as a serious violation of international humanitarian law.
“Attacks on schools and children constitute an even graver violation of international humanitarian law and cross the bottom line of human conscience and morality,” Guo told reporters at a regular press briefing.
Iran’s Deputy Minister of Cultural Heritage and Tourism, Ali Darabi, had earlier said the government would turn the Shajarah Tayyebeh girls’ school in Minab, Hormozgan Province, into a memorial for victims of what he described as US-Israeli aggression.
The school was struck on the first day of the joint US-Israeli military campaign, Operation Epic Fury, on February 28, 2026. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said at least 171 schoolgirls were killed in the attack.
The New York Times later reported that the school had been hit by US Tomahawk missiles.
Guo said China deeply mourns the deaths of the students and extends heartfelt condolences to their families.
“China stands ready to continue providing necessary assistance to Iran in a humanitarian spirit to support the Iranian people through this difficult time,” he said.
Guo also said China remains deeply concerned about the ongoing tensions in the Middle East and condemns all forms of indiscriminate attacks on civilians and non-military targets.
He urged all parties to immediately halt military operations, return to dialogue and negotiations as soon as possible, avoid further escalation, and prevent the conflict from spreading further.
The United States and Israel launched attacks on targets across Iran, including in Tehran, causing widespread damage and killing large numbers of civilians, including Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and about 1,300 others, among them several senior Iranian officials.
Iran retaliated with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, Iraq, and several Gulf states hosting US military assets.
The United States and Israel initially said the “preventive” strikes were necessary to counter what they described as threats stemming from Iran’s nuclear program, but later made clear they also sought political change in Iran.
