TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Earth's mightiest heroes will be back on the screen later this year with 'Avengers: Doomsday,' but among the star-studded cast, some old faces appear.
It has been months since Chris Evans was announced to reprise his role as Steve Rogers in the upcoming blockbuster, set to be released on December 18, 2026. But he finally revealed why he decided to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, half a decade later.
Years in the Making
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly at San Diego Comic-Con, the 45-year-old actor said Marvel Studios keeps pitching him new ways to bring Steve Rogers back into the storyline, including one that would see him take on his alternate moniker, Nomad.
Nomad appeared in a notable 1974 comic book run written by Steve Englehart and illustrated by Sal Buscema, where Steve Rogers dropped his Captain America mantle. The 2018's 'Avengers: Infinity War' sees the Star-Spangled Man undergoing a similar experience, though he was never explicitly referred to as Nomad.
“When we finished Endgame in 2018, Lou [D’Esposito] and Kevin [Feige] took me to dinner and they were like, ‘We’d love to keep doing movies with Steve Rogers as Nomad,’” said Evans, who said he rejected the proposal at the time.
"For whatever reason, it just didn’t feel right at the time. … I was a little precious. I wanted to preserve it. But I just said, ‘Please keep pitching.’”
Over the course of eight years, Evans said, he heard "at least a dozen pitches."
"And they were all wonderful. It just never quite felt right. And you do start thinking maybe that’s the expiration—whatever it is—maybe it’s not right because it’s just not right.”
Things took a bit of a turn when Marvel decided to bring back his MCU costar, Robert Downey Jr. The seasoned actor is set to return in 'Avengers: Doomsday' as the main villain, Doctor Doom.
“And all of a sudden it felt right. [Doomsday co-director Joe Russo] gave me the pitch, and Downey was [back]. It just all of a sudden… it was like, ‘This is it,’” Evans said.
Speaking about possible future return as Steve Rogers, Evans said, “I guess it’s a never-say-never, but certainly not willing to just jump back in for anything because I think everyone here is precious with their role in the universe.”
Will Chris Evans Come Back as Captain America?
Steve Rogers' storyline initially wrapped up during 'Avengers: Endgame,' with him traveling back to his original time to reunite with his longtime lover Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell). He passed off his shield and the Captain America mantle to Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie).
After, Wilson co-headlined his own Disney+ series, 'The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,' before starring in his own Captain America movie, 'Brave New World,' in 2025.
Chris Evans' comeback as Steve Rogers begs the question of whether it will sideline Wilson's Captain America, but Mackie shuts down the speculation in an interview with Variety, as quoted from Screen Rant.
"No—Steve Rogers in the comic book—There is a comic book. You say you're a nerd. Read the comic book. Don't be a nerd by trade, be a nerd by fact. So, in the comic book, Steve Rogers becomes Nomad," he said.
Nevertheless, whether Steve will come to take back his shield, 'Avengers: Doomsday' is set to become Marvel's most ambitious project yet; crossovers between superhero teams (Fantastic Four, X-Men, and Thunderbolts, to name a few) and multiple actors reprising their roles.
