Dutch Hiker Falls on Mount Rinjani; Second Incident This Week

2 days ago 9

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Mount Rinjani's Sembalun Crater Trail, leading towards Segara Anak Lake, has regrettably seen another incident. Following a Swiss hiker's fall on Wednesday, July 16, a female hiker from the Netherlands, Sarah Tamar van Hulten, fell on the trail today, July 17.

Sarah was reported to have fallen at 1:00 p.m. local time on the trail towards Segara Anak Lake, the same path where Benekdikt Emmeneger, the Swiss hiker, had fallen just a day earlier.

"We received the report this afternoon from the Rinjani National Park Management Office (BTNGR) and immediately dispatched a Rescue Team from the Kayangan SAR Post," said Muhamad Hariyadi, Head of the Mataram SAR Office, on Thursday afternoon.

Given the difficult terrain and remote location, coordination with relevant parties was promptly initiated to attempt an aerial evacuation.

"Coordination has been made with SGi Air Bali and the Head of the Denpasar SAR Office to deploy a helicopter to expedite the evacuation process," Hariyadi confirmed.

Airborne rescue efforts began swiftly. An SGi Air Bali helicopter reportedly took off from Bali for Mount Rinjani at 3:45 p.m. local time.

Saidar Rahmanjaya, Head of Operations and Alert Section of the Mataram SAR Office, confirmed by phone that Sarah had been successfully evacuated to Bali.

"Around 4:52 p.m., the person had been successfully flown to Bali," Saidar said. "According to initial information, the victim has a reported broken neck."

Sarah Tamar van Hulten registered to hike Rinjani via the Sembalun Route on July 16, 2025, and was descending towards Segara Anak Lake on July 17, 2025. Her fall occurred near the location where the Swiss hiker had also fallen.

"That location is indeed quite dangerous, so we urge hikers to be more cautious," Saidar warned.

This incident marks a worrying trend of foreign hikers falling on Mount Rinjani. Before the Swiss hiker, Benekdikt Emmeneger, a hiker from Brazil Juliana Marins also suffered a fall while trekking to Mount Rinjani's summit and tragically passed away.
