ELON Musk, the owner of the artificial intelligence (AI) company, xAI, is planning to sue Apple. He accuses Apple of manipulating the ranking in the App Store to favor OpenAI, xAI's competitor. "Apple has done such things that it is impossible for any AI company other than OpenAI to reach the #1 position in the App Store, which is a clear violation of antitrust laws," Musk said in a post on the X platform, as quoted by The Verge on Wednesday, August 13, 2025.
Elon Musk questioned several things that formed the basis of his accusations. "Why do you refuse to place X or Grok in the 'Must Have' section when X is the #1 news app in the world and Grok is at #5 among all apps?" he said.
Response to Elon Musk's Accusations
Apple responded to the allegations in a Bloomberg report. According to Apple, the App Store is designed as a bias-free service. "We display thousands of apps through charts, algorithmic recommendations, and expert curation lists using objective criteria," said Apple.
Sam Altman, the Chief Executive Officer of OpenAI, accused Musk of manipulating the X platform to benefit his company. "This is an extraordinary claim, given what I've heard about Elon's efforts to manipulate X for his own benefit," Altman wrote in his post on X.
Altman once challenged Musk to sign a legal statement that he had never altered the X algorithm for personal gain. "I will apologize if that is true," he said.
Musk responded to Altman by calling him a liar. "Your nonsense post got 3 million views, far more than mine, even though my number of followers is 50 times larger than yours," Musk's written statement said.
The feud between Musk and Altman is not the first. According to Anadolu, they co-founded OpenAI together in 2015. Their relationship soured in 2018. At that time, Musk stepped down from the board of directors after his demands to become CEO and have majority control were rejected.
Since then, Musk has filed two lawsuits against OpenAI. The Tesla founder accused the company of breaching the initial agreement by transitioning from a non-profit organization to a commercial entity partnering with Microsoft.
Following OpenAI's partnership with Apple to integrate ChatGPT into the iPhone, iPad, and Mac in 2024, Musk threatened to ban Apple devices in his company if OpenAI's technology was combined with Apple's operating system.
