TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - England midfielder Jordan Henderson is expected to miss the remainder of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after suffering a serious wrist injury while celebrating his team's dramatic 3-2 victory over Mexico in the Round of 16, dealing a blow to Thomas Tuchel's squad ahead of the quarterfinals.
According to ESPN, the 36-year-old sustained the injury after England's victory at Azteca Stadium on Sunday, where Harry Kane's penalty and a Jude Bellingham brace secured a memorable win despite England playing with 10 men for much of the second half.
Henderson was injured while jumping over the advertising hoardings to celebrate with England supporters after the final whistle. He landed awkwardly and is suspected to have fractured a bone in his left arm or suffered a serious wrist injury.
The English Football Association has yet to confirm the full extent of the injury. However, Henderson is expected to remain with the England squad in a supporting role as the team prepares for Saturday's quarterfinal against Norway in Miami.
Henderson requires wrist surgery and is not expected to play any further part in the tournament. The Brentford midfielder was taken from the stadium on a stretcher after receiving oxygen before being transported to a hospital in Mexico City, where he remained overnight with a member of England's medical staff while the rest of the squad returned to their training base in Kansas City, as revealed by The Athletic.
The injury came despite Henderson not featuring in the match. The veteran midfielder remained an unused substitute throughout England's victory over Mexico, although he was shown a yellow card in the 98th minute from the sidelines.
Speaking after the match, England manager Thomas Tuchel admitted the incident tempered his emotions following one of his team's biggest victories of the tournament.
"My emotions are very mixed," Tuchel said. "I'm just proud of the mentality and the attitude. We overcame every obstacle that was thrown at us."
The England coach added that Henderson's injury cast a shadow over the celebrations.
"I'm sad because Jordan got injured. He injured his wrist, he is at the moment in the hospital. It is a quite serious injury. It just doesn't fit with the evening that Jordan is now not with us," Tuchel said.
England midfielder Jude Bellingham, who scored twice against Mexico, also expressed concern over his teammate's condition while praising the medical staff.
"He is in a bit of bother, but our medical team have everything under control," Bellingham said. "I'm not best to give too much detail as I do not know much going on, but everyone was there to support him."
Henderson reached a personal milestone earlier in the tournament when he came off the bench against Panama, becoming the first England men's player to appear at four FIFA World Cups. The Panama match remains his only appearance at the 2026 tournament.
England will now continue their World Cup campaign without one of their most experienced squad members when they face Erling Haaland's Norway for a place in the semifinals.
