TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Europe's unprecedented heat wave is expected to shift eastward over the weekend after shattering temperature records across several countries, while Germany is forecast to endure at least a couple more days of extreme heat.
The "heat dome" that has gripped Western Europe is expected to move toward Central Europe and the Balkans, bringing dangerous temperatures to a wider region. Millions of people across Europe have already experienced temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius, with unusually warm nights making it difficult for residents to recover from the daytime heat.
Germany recorded its highest temperature ever for the second consecutive day on Saturday, according to the German Weather Service (DWD). A preliminary reading of 41.5 degrees Celsius was measured in Möckern-Drewitz in eastern Germany, surpassing Friday's record of 41.3 degrees Celsius set in Saarbrücken.
The weather agency warned that temperatures could still approach 42 degrees Celsius and issued a red heat alert covering most of the country.
As reported by DW, several European countries also broke national temperature records on Saturday as the heat wave intensified across the continent.
Denmark registered its hottest day since records began in 1874, with temperatures reaching 37 degrees Celsius in Odum, north of Aarhus. Switzerland also recorded a new national high of 38.8 degrees Celsius in Basel, while the Czech Republic reported a record 40.6 degrees Celsius in Doksany, north of Prague.
The extreme conditions have prompted several governments to issue their highest weather warnings. The Czech Republic, Hungary, and Moldova declared maximum heat alerts for the weekend as temperatures continued to climb.
Romania became the latest country to issue a red alert, warning that dangerously high temperatures are expected from Monday through Wednesday. Slovakia also warned residents after recording its hottest night on record, with overnight temperatures remaining above 26.3 degrees Celsius.
Countries across the Balkans are also preparing for intense heat in the coming days as the weather system continues moving eastward.
According to a rapid scientific assessment by the World Weather Attribution group, the record-breaking European heat wave would have been "virtually impossible" without human-induced climate change.
The researchers concluded that such extreme heat events are now up to 200 times more likely than they were just two decades ago, underscoring the growing impact of global warming on weather patterns across Europe.
