TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Two videos are circulating on X and Facebook [archive] claiming to show laser beams shining on residential areas in Venezuela before and after twin earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 magnitudes on June 24, 2026.
The videos circulated after the twin earthquakes in Venezuela, which collapsed high-rise buildings, killed 1,719 people, and injured more than 5,000. However, is it true that the videos show red lasers surrounding residential areas in Venezuela before and after the powerful twin earthquakes?
FACT CHECK
Tempo's Fact Check team verified the content using a reverse image search and compared it with information from credible sources. The results showed that the videos were edited using a fake image.
Video Verification
The first video circulating on X came from the Archive.available account on TikTok uploaded on March 19, 2026. The content has been labeled as a product generated by artificial intelligence (AI).
The account included a link to the Gumroad platform, which provides paid content. The creator emphasized that the video he uploaded was not intended to support any particular theory. "Nothing is presented as fact or theory," he wrote.
Tempo then tested the video using an AI detection tool, Zhuque AI Detection Assistant. The scan results showed a 99.6 percent probability that the content was AI-generated.
Another detection tool, Truth Scan, also concluded that the accuracy of AI-generated elements reached 94 percent.
A second video circulating on Facebook with a similar claim also originated from the same TikTok account. The content, uploaded on February 13, 2026, contains no mention of events in Venezuela.
Based on a scan by the Hive Moderation detection tool, the content contained 78.9 percent artificial intelligence elements. The Zhuque AI Detection Assistant also showed consistent results, with an AI element level of 86.63 percent.
Venezuela's Post-Earthquake Situation
As reported by Tempo, a series of earthquakes struck Venezuela on June 24, 2026. Two main quakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 magnitudes, collapsed multi-story buildings, killing 1,719 people and injuring more than 5,000.
Currently, at least 30 countries are involved in evacuation efforts. Venezuela's interim President, Delcy Rodriguez, stated that the government is focused on assisting residents and assessing building damage.
Jordanian fact-checker Misbar explained that the laser video narrative was deliberately circulated to fuel a conspiracy theory that Venezuela was attacked by a US geographic weapon.
However, this is false and has been refuted by a report by Politifact.com. There are no credible sources or scientific evidence that state the appearance of red laser beams before or after the earthquake, or that the disaster is linked to geographic weapons.
