FAO: Russia's Food Supply Unaffected by Strait of Hormuz Blockade

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Oleg Kobyakov, Head of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Liaison Office in Russia, said that Russia faces no threat of a food crisis caused by a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz because domestic food supplies are more than sufficient, according to RIA Novosti.

As quoted by ANTARA, Kobyakov said the Russian market is not at risk, noting that this view is shared by Russian experts. He added that the market has sufficient supplies across all product categories and is therefore unlikely to face significant disruptions from the situation in the Strait of Hormuz.

On February 28, the United States and Israel began striking a number of targets in Iran, triggering a retaliatory attack from the Iranian side.

Then, in mid-June, Iran and the U.S. signed a memorandum of understanding to end hostilities, although both sides subsequently resumed attacking each other. To this day, the conflict between the U.S. and Iran remains unresolved.

The escalation of the conflict has brought shipping activity through the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil and liquefied natural gas trade, to a near-total standstill. This has triggered a rise in fuel prices worldwide.
