TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported a tectonic earthquake shaking the region of Bekasi Regency, West Java, and its surrounding areas on Monday, September 22, 2025, at 12:41:59 WIB (Western Indonesia Time).
Based on BMKG's analysis, the earthquake had a magnitude of M2.6. The epicenter was located at coordinates 6.5 LS and 107.26 BT, precisely on land, 17 kilometers southeast of Bekasi Regency at a depth of 8 kilometers.
"By considering the location of the epicenter and its hypocenter depth, the earthquake that occurred was a type of shallow earthquake caused by the activity of the West Java Back-arc Thrust fault," said the Director of Earthquake and Tsunami at BMKG, Daryono, in a statement on Monday.
The impact of the earthquake, based on reports from the public, was felt in the Karawang region with an Intensity Scale of II-III MM, indicating that several people felt vibrations and that light hanging objects swayed. The vibrations were clearly felt indoors, as if a truck was passing by.
As of now, there have been no reports of building damage caused by the earthquake.
Previously, an earthquake triggered by the activity of the West Java Back-arc Thrust fault shook the southern part of Karawang with a magnitude of M4.7 on Saturday night, August 20, 2025.
The tremors from the 10-kilometer deep earthquake were felt as far as Bekasi, Purwakarta, Cikarang, Depok, Bandung, Jakarta, Tangerang Selatan, Bekasi Timur, Tangerang, Pandeglang, Cianjur, Lebak, and Pelabuhan Ratu.
The West Java Back-arc Thrust fault has been active for the past five million years, and the recent earthquake originated from its part known as the Citarum Segment.
