TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Germany has reiterated that it will not recognize a Palestinian state until Israel and Palestine reach a negotiated two-state solution, a statement issued just days before the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Al Arabiya reported.
France is expected to become the latest country to recognize Palestine during the UN session. In recent months, Australia, Britain, Canada, and Portugal have taken similar steps, widely seen as efforts to increase international pressure on Israel over its military operations in Gaza.
Israel’s operations have killed tens of thousands of Palestinians and devastated large parts of the Gaza Strip, drawing mounting international criticism. Supporters of Palestinian recognition argue that the move underscores the urgent need for accountability.
Israel, however, has condemned the recognition efforts, calling them a reward to Hamas for its October 7, 2023, attacks.
Before departing for New York, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul reiterated Germany’s position, saying, “For Germany, recognition of a Palestinian state comes more at the end of the process. But this process must begin now.”
He stressed that only a negotiated two-state solution could allow Israelis and Palestinians to live in peace, security, and dignity.
Germany’s historical responsibility for the Holocaust has long anchored its foreign policy in support of Israel. However, Berlin has grown increasingly critical of Israel’s actions in Gaza in recent months, particularly as civilian casualties mount. The UN has already declared famine conditions in parts of Gaza.
More than 140 world leaders are expected to attend this week’s UN General Assembly, where Palestine is anticipated to dominate the agenda. Israel and its closest allies, including the United States, are boycotting the summit.
Israel’s UN Ambassador Danny Danon dismissed the gathering as a “circus,” claiming such actions legitimize terrorism.
Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faces mounting domestic political pressure amid the wave of international recognition of Palestine. Israeli media reported that his right-wing government is considering annexing part or all of the occupied West Bank.
Analysts say Netanyahu will seek U.S. backing and protection during his visit to New York for the UN meetings.
